Following on from our blog post last week on our Sevilla art print, which you can read about here, this week we are spotlighting our vibrant Arancia print.
This is a continuation of our ongoing series of blog posts on each of our original prints which we started with when we opened our independent online shop. Hopefully you will get to know us a little better by the end and understand just how we get inspired and create each print.
We illustrate all of the designs we sell as prints by hand so you know that love - and patience - has gone into each one!
We will be featuring one print a week and posting lots of tempting content over on our Instagram page so please follow us over there so you don’t miss out.
Here is the Arancia print:
This is an uplifting print featuring sunny citrus colours balanced with a neutral base and grounded with deep viridian blue-green accents. The orange tree branches climbing across the paper draws you in and breaks up the structured lines of the building behind.
We love the limited colour palette of this print and the details of the shuttered balcony doors. You will see from the time lapse below that after many variations, we finally arrived at this end product which we are pretty pleased with!
This print was inspired by our past summer travels to Sicily. We have visited Catania and explored the Messina province many times before and fell in love with its character and rural simplicity. We feel that Sicily is hugely underrated as a holiday destination which is such a shame as it has so much to offer. It is the epitome of rustic charm and you can often feel as though you have stepped out to a different time and a much calmer pace of life which is most welcome.
To try and replicate that feeling and bring an element of sunshine and vibrancy into the home, we wanted to highlight the stunning citrus trees that line some of the towns in Sicily, famous for its blood oranges.
According to the official ‘visit Sicily’ information website, Sicilian blood oranges are exclusively cultivated in the Piana di Catania and in some villages in the Enna area and Siracusa. The proximity to the active Etna volcano creates ideal growing conditions for this extraordinary fruit and its hallmark red pulp.
The towns that we visited were overflowing with rustic charm. There were so many inspiring views throughout the quaint towns bursting with oranges trees.
Here are some images where we drew inspiration from:
We are in love with those beautiful shutter windows and doors.
For those of you who enjoy a time-lapse, here is a short clip of the print in the making:
We had a number of ideas for this print and you can see the different directions it was taken in. We do still like the idea of having a lake and mountains in the background, but wanted to keep the colours of this print more muted so went for a street-view instead. Like with the Sevilla print, we had initially included a cat (we love cats, can you tell?) but felt it better to keep the composition simple in the end.
It took many variations of the doorway to finally arrive at the shutter-style doors. It is worth persevering sometimes!
Here is a close-up of some of the texture details in the print which add to the rustic feel.
We think this print would look great in a living room to compliment any soft furnishings that might also be in a citrus colour, or in a hallway or landing as a statement piece. If you have a home office, then the colour orange/yellow is associated with energy, success and creativity so this print would be perfect for motivating you subconsciously throughout the day!
This print is available on our online shop and comes in sizes A4 and A3.
We love seeing how you style each of our pieces - so please do send us a photo or tag us on Instagram!
