Sevilla blog post - Greenhaus Prints

Following on from our blog post last week on Palm Dream, which you can read about in our blog, this week we are travelling further up the globe to Seville - or Sevilla - which is also the title of our next featured print.

We are continuing our series of blog posts on each of our 10 prints which we started with when we opened our independent online shop.  Hopefully you will get to know us a little better by the end and understand just how we get inspired and create each print.

We illustrate all of the designs we sell as prints by hand so you know that love - and patience - has gone into each one!

We will be featuring one print a week and posting lots of tempting content over on our Instagram page (@greenhausprints) so please follow us over there so you don’t miss out.

This is the Sevilla print:

This is a take on a vintage travel poster but as a print. It features bright whitewashed buildings with a stark mustard yellow accent and lots of foliage and plant life.  There’s lots of detail in the scenery which is balanced against the natural-coloured negative space around it. We particularly like the dappled light cast on the ground from the sun filtering through the trees.

We were fortunate to travel to Seville not so long ago.  It was at the peak of summer and those of you who may know about the city will be aware that it is also known as the ‘frying pan of Spain’.  Well that is quite right!  After some fact-checking this might even extend to the whole of Europe as it is thought to be one of the hottest cities in the continent! When we visited it was a scorching 42 degrees Celsius with full sunshine and no breeze so it was certainly living up to its nickname.

We spent the entire day sightseeing and trying to soak it all up.  The scenery was stunning and the architecture was incredible.  As the day crept into the afternoon, we needed some respite and took a couple of turns off the main drag to a quiet street.  We came across a quaint little scene and, it may have been the weariness from the heat, but there was something about it which felt special and that we would want to revisit again.

This is the photo taken at that very moment:

It looks quite different to the end product.  The feeling didn’t really translate in the photo (as usually tends to be the case for us!) so taking matters into our own hands we decided to use some of that artistic licence we’ve heard so much about and make a few changes to our liking.  Goodbye tree in the middle of the shot, the awkward table and chairs and ugly bin!

We loved Seville in general, it was culturally vibrant and bursting with energy.  Here are some other photos taken from that trip:

Perhaps these could also be translated into prints one day...

For those of you who enjoy a time-lapse, here is a short clip of the print in the making:

We played around with a few options in the foreground but thought it best to keep the palette neutral and the subjects simple.  We think the ‘painterly’ style of this fits well with the nod to the vintage travel posters.

The neutral palette makes this a versatile piece which could go in most rooms.  We are considering making this part of a series of travel poster style prints to mix and match.  There are so many capital cities and places that have had their own take, but we would like to explore less popular destinations and draw on our first hand experience if we have been lucky enough to visit there before!

This print is available on our online shop and comes in sizes A4 and A3.
