How To Master Colour Blocking In 2020

Greenhaus prints - how to master colour blocking in 2020

Colour blocking as a concept is not, in itself, anything new.  Accent walls have been a prevailing trend throughout the years and experimenting with more than one colour in a room has proved a popular way to refresh a space.

We have been scrolling through our Instagram feed recently and noticed a resurgence of the colour block, but in a much more playful, softer and creative way.  We have loved seeing all of the different combinations from some of our favourite interior design and home reno accounts.  They each have their own unique take on colour blocking and made it work for their individual space and we wanted to share these with you.

What is great about this idea is that there are so many colours and shapes to choose from and areas around the home to make the most of this interesting design element - and if you don’t like it or want a change then it is so easy to paint over and start again!

Colour blocking in this way is also great for those who want interest in their space but perhaps not in such an intense way as painting an entire wall or introducing multiple colours.  It also creates some detail beyond a minimalist aesthetic if you are yearning for something extra.

If you are tempted to take the plunge, then here are some of our favourite and inspiring colour blocking looks to hopefully spark some ideas for your interior:

A colour change can help to break up different areas in an open plan home. This feminine take from @allisonsextoninteriors really brightens up the wall and divides the drinks cabinet from the rest of the room.  We love the unique shape too!

A simple yet effective centrepiece to a bedroom from @maggiemillerinteriors in a beautiful natural tone. Matching soft furnishings help tie the colour scheme together.

This version of the colour block above the headboard from @tatjanas_world_ catches the eye in a stunning muted grey-blue whilst complimenting the style of the room.

Using coloured shapes help define smaller areas of the home that deserve a bit more attention.  It can be a great way to highlight wall art, prints or photographs.  We love this beautiful space from @indie.boho.nest.  The darker matte colour really draws the eye in and creates an illusion of depth.

Another place we have loved seeing the colour block shine is as a backdrop to wall-mounted shelves. This take from @livingawilderlife uses a pretty blush pink above a vanity to neatly frame the shelf above.

This is a similar concept from @housetohome_no.28 but uses a stunning matte black to create some real drama.  We love this bold circle and the way the items on the shelves help to break it up. If you are keen to replicate this, it will require some careful taping or a steady hand though!

Artwork or photographs either hanging on the wall or leaning on a shelf could also be specifically chosen to compliment or constraint against the colour block to really elevate the space. We have a range of hand drawn unique prints available in our shop if you are looking for some inspiration.

What do you think of this particular colour blocking trend and which images are your favourite?
